If you looking for a day for love and marriage celebration, then Gangaur Festival is your next trip target. This is the festival that contains the story symbolizes marital bliss and has become one of the most important festivals for the people of Rajasthan.
The meaning of “Gangaur”
The word “Gangaur” comes from combining the names “Gana” of Lord Shiva and his wife Parvathi - “Gauri”. A manifestation of Parvati, she represents purity and austerity. According to legend, Gauri won the affection of Lord Shiva through her deep devotion and dedicated meditation to attract him. Gauri goes back to her parent’s home for a few days to bless her friends with marital bliss until her husband comes to collect her and take her back to their marital home.
Gangaur means the devotion of people towards Gauri and Lord Shiva as the festival is celebrated in every household. Unmarried girls follow rituals for 16 days and worship Gangaur for being blessed with a good husband. Married women celebrate it for long life and prosperity of their husbands. It is necessary for newlywed women to worship in the first year of their marriage in Rajasthan.
When will it start?
This festival of marital bliss starts immediately after Holi festival. The upcoming celebration starts on 21st March 2019 and ends on 8th April 2019. The festival is celebrated in a few destinations like Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Nathdwara, and others
How about Gangaur’s activities?
During the fortnight-long worship, the women of the region dress up in the traditional attire and wear jewels, both married and single women fast themselves to channel powerful Parvati’s example in their families and marriages.
On the seventh day, women acquire clay pots called ghudilas that are filled over the course of Gangaur with presents from elder family members—sweets, flowers, and gift money. They carry them atop their heads in a colorful procession of song and dance, often sending the scent of jasmine and tuberose trailing from low buns, loose plaits, and veils, in preparation for the festival’s end, when wood and clay statuettes of Parvati are readied.
This day is also considered as the match-fixing day. Men and women interact with each other and pick their life partner on this day. Women can experience having a temporary tattoo made with myrtle paste, on the palms and feet.
